University of Windsor

The University of Windsor is a comprehensive, student-focused university, with more than 15,500 students enrolled in a wide range of programs. The University of Windsor is located next to North America’s busiest international border crossing and looks out on one of Canada’s most beautiful waterfronts on the Detroit River. Windsor is also Canada’s southernmost city.

This location speaks to UWindsor’s strength as an internationally oriented, multi-disciplined institution that actively enables a broad diversity of students, faculty and staff to make a better world through education, scholarship, research and engagement.

Its basic characteristics of openness, warmth, and support make the University of Windsor an exceptionally welcoming community for students from all over the world, which is reflected in our very diverse student and faculty population. UWindsor has a strong committment to access and equity in education for all.

Initiative(s)

OER ACE Grants

The OER ACE grants aim to support UWindsor faculty and staff to adopt, create, and extend open educational resources and open pedagogies, which will contribute to the reputation of the institution, and recruitment and retention of students, as well as our mandate for making the world a better place. In addition to enabling significant cost savings to students, these grants will help faculty gain experience and expertise in selecting, adapting, and creating open resources that are appropriate to their context and students' needs. Faculty will also gain awareness of the values and practices associated with open pedagogy and a critical appreciation of the reciprocal relationship between pedagogy and evolving OERs.

Leddy Library Open Education and Office of Open Learning OER showcase

Leddy Library has a dedicated librarian role for open educational resources and has started to build online resources for finding, creating, and storing OERs and other open artefacts in their catalogue. They also host our Open Journal System, as well as supporting open publishing in a range of other ways. The Office of Open Learning is also currently building a space (to be launched in Open Education Week 2019) to house and highlight institutional OERs, and has hired an OER student intern to work on transitioning OERs to this space, including providing metadata and new formats for some resources, and ensuring those resources are discoverable in other OER repositories/search engines.

Open Education Summit

In May 2018 UWindsor hosted, with St Clair College and Lambton College as partners, the first regional Open Education Summit. This was a forum for discussing and workshopping open pedagogies, and showcasing open educational practices from southern Ontario and Michigan. It is planned to be an ongoing event rotating between the partners every second year.
