The OEGlobal24 Organising Team is delighted to announce that Professor Penny Jane Burke, UNESCO Chair in Equity, Social Justice, and Higher Education, will deliver one of the three keynote addresses at the 2024 OE Global Conference. Professor Burke is a distinguished scholar and leader in the field of equity and social justice in higher education, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to transformative education.
Professor Burke currently serves as the Global Innovation Chair of Equity and Director of the Centre of Excellence for Equity in Higher Education (CEEHE) at the University of Newcastle. Her work is dedicated to mobilising higher education as a powerful force for equity and social justice. She has been instrumental in developing innovative frameworks that create time, space, and critical resources for building equity knowledge and capacity. Her approach emphasises embedded, collaborative, and sustained professional learning through communities of praxis.
Professor Burke has an extensive publication record, with notable works including Accessing Education (2002), Reconceptualising Lifelong Learning (2007), The Right to Higher Education (2012), Changing Pedagogical Spaces in Higher Education (2017), Gender in an Era of Post-Truth Populism (2022), and Equity in Higher Education: Time for Social Justice Praxis (2024). Her impact extends globally, holding an honorary position at the University of Bath as Global Chair of Social Innovation and an Associate of the Centre for Higher Education Transformations at the University of Bristol.
